Land of Fire and Ice
The Land of Fire and Ice is the first book in a trilogy of middle-grade adventure stories about a young boy who lives in a primitive land of long ago. Argo, a boy of twelve seasons, kills a Slasher in the pre-historic forest and is invited to go on a hunting expedition to determine why many of the animals are leaving. On the journey, he meets Gonther, a boy his age from the Clan of the Mountain. The boys convince their elders they should go together on a coming-of-age journey to visit the mystical Man of the Mountain, and their adventures begin! Brota, Gonther’s pet wolf, runs away from home to join them. They travel together, living off the land with their slings and Argo’s spear, encountering real and challenging fantastical creatures in their primitive world.

A flash flood carries them into the land of the Talloo, a giant who imprisons little men to do his work. The boys fight off man-eating fliers to free the men and, in exchange, they’re told about a beast with a golden horn who lives in the Land of Fire and Ice. Three hunters who want to kill the beast for its golden horn discover the boys are searching for it too and chase them to it in a race for their lives. Maida, living in the beautiful forbidding land with her grandfather, leads them to a cave, saving them from the hunters and the three of them set off to save the beast.
