To the Land of Fire and Ice
To the Land of Fire and Ice is the first book in a trilogy of middle-grade fantasy adventures which take place in a primitive land and feature a twelve-year-old boy named Argo, his brother-in-spirit, Gonther, and Maida, a girl who rescues them in the Land of Fire and Ice.

When his small village is raided by another clan, Argo, as the only remaining member of his people, is left to fend for himself. He ventures into his dangerous world, struggling to be brave amid his battle to survive in a land filled with frightening and sometimes magical creatures, so he can one day find his mother and sister, who were taken captive.

On his journey, he meets Gonther, a boy his age from the Clan of the Mountain. Argo asks if he can accompany Gonther on his coming-of-age journey to visit the mystical Man of the Mountain. Brota, Gonther’s pet wolf, runs away from home to join them, and the three of them travel together, living off the land with their slings and Argo’s spear.

A flash flood carries them into the land of the Talloo, a giant who imprisons men to do his harmful work. The boys fight off Flesh-Eating Fliers to free the men and, in exchange, they’re told about a beast with a golden horn that lives in the Land of Fire and Ice. Three hunters who want to kill the beast for its gold discover the boys are searching for it too and pursue them in a race for their lives. A girl named Maida, who lives in an ice house with her grandfather, hides the boys in a cave, saving them from the hunters. After learning how to survive in the beautiful forbidding land, Argo and Gonther set off with Maida to save the beast.
